About Finding Balance
When we balance, we align our body’s center of gravity with the earth’s gravitational field. Quite literally, we place ourselves in physical equilibrium with a fundamental force of nature. When we reflect on the mental and emotional, balancing brings balance. Not only on the mat, but also away from it. It helps us to increase our focus, release stress and keep our cool as things get wobbly (as is life).
Balance is a learned skill; we must challenge our balance in order to improve it. On a physical level balancing implies a deep integration and coordination of our body as a whole. Balance is a complex interaction between body parts. While in challenging other asanas we will mostly feel the bigger muscles, in balancing asanas it’s all about the smaller intricate muscles. The practice of balance poses improves the function of the body’s equilibrium receptors. These are located in the vestibular system in the inner ear and provide information that enables the body to stay balanced, in action as well as stillness.
